Previously an area caught between Georgia and Turkey, Batumi is part of the Independent Republic of Ajaria. The harsh rules of the soldiers who roamed the streets were relaxed and the city has opened up to tourism. By the way, Batumi can even be the object of a trip on its own if you want to spend a cheap seaside holiday, given that there is an international airport on site.
Party and relax
Batumi is one of Georgia’s most dynamic cities. Light years away from what you might have seen on a trek, the city is full of life, large boulevards and beaches. Bars and restaurants are open late on the Croisette. If you need a little entertainment, this is the place to party! 8 kilometers of Croisette are available to you! And at the end, you will see the moving statue “Man and Woman” : two lovers embrace briefly, story of a forbidden love between a Muslim and a Georgian princess.
As it is close to the Turkish border, Batoumi benefits from some developments of Ottoman origin. Thereby, you can even enjoy the hammams. Some date from the 19th century and their interior decoration is quite magical.
In a completely different style, the Alphabet Tower. Representing all the characters of the Georgian alphabet on its walls, it rises high enough above Batumi that you do not miss it.
The Georgian language is very specific: it has its own alphabet and is unlike any other. Moreover, the three evolutions that she has known have all been listed as UNESCO heritage.
In good weather, climb to the top of the east tower a good way to have an overview of the city … to composite architecture but you must be used to it now! From there or from the top of Batumi gondola, find the places that attract you.
Also do a walk around Place de l’Europe. The statue of Medea erected in its center gives it a very solemn air. Here you will find some of the oldest buildings dating from the construction of Batumi, around 1880. The old buildings are decorated with mosaics and sometimes very beautiful paintings.
While looking for what to do in Georgia, you may have wanted to get closer to the locals and their way of life. Here in Batumi, there is a strong muslim community and a very nice little mosque to visit. By asking the faithful, they should let you enter the Orta Djame Mosque. Built in 1886, its minaret and walls were then painted. The visit is worth a look!
To walk around the city, you can rent a bike or walk the streets. Remember that the beach is 8 km long…
If after all this you still have energy, I advise you to push your visit until Botanical Garden of the city, founded in 1912. It has 9 sectors, each corresponding to an ecosystem of the planet. A real breath of fresh air after all your visits!
Are you an early riser? That’s good ! Meet at 7 a.m. at fish market for the opening. In addition tobuy at more than reasonable prices your freshly caught evening meal, you will have the opportunity toobserve the work of seafarers who unload the boxes of the calles.
However, if you prefer to spend the morning in the back of your bed, know that the market is open every day until 8 p.m.
The regional products market, located near the fish one, is also to be done in my opinion. Open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., this is the opportunity to immerse yourself up to your neck in the smell and colors of spices sold in quantity. You will also find oils, cold meats, cheese… enough to refuel and treat yourself to a visit at the same time!
